Job Description:

Provide technical support for faculty members Collaborate with faculty members in design and implementation of electrical and electromechanical systems for research Facilitate computer interfacing to laboratory equipment using standard software, such as LabVIEW Complete minor in-house repairs of electronic equipment Work with vendors and faculty members when significant repairs and/or modifications are required Build, test, prototype, and fabricate modest specialty devices according to industrial safety and reliability standards (IEC, IPC, ISO) providing a durable record of documentation Support faculty in radio frequency and signal conditioning applications Provide electrical support applying practical knowledge of safety codes (NEC) including three phase power, industrial controls technology, programmable logic control (PLC), and motor controls Provide vacuum system support, possibly including straightforward in-house vacuum equipment repairs and helium leak testing Provide support for gas cylinders, gas handling, pressure regulators, leak testing, and training per fire and safety standards Design and fabricate electronic enclosures per industrial standards using sheet metal machine tools and/or providing CAD files to a machinist Coordinate and prioritize the work of the department electronics shop Lead and organize a team of student employees to carry out technical support for faculty members as described above as appropriate Train and supervise student assistants according to industrial safety standards (OSHA) in Mechanical systems design, construction, and maintenance Electronic systems design, construction, and maintenance Provide electronics support for teaching labs Triage of electronic systems and equipment Minor in-house repairs of electronic equipment Work with instructors and vendors in procuring new equipment Maintain a limited inventory of electronic test and measurement equipment and supplies for faculty, staff, and student use Provide training to faculty, staff, and students to use electronic test and measurement equipment, as needed Maintain stock of commonly used fabrication and anticipated maintenance components Maintain library of equipment documentation, service manuals, and purchasing history Provide administrative support Dispose of equipment (sales, surplus, or scrap) Work with Physical Facilities for proper function of laboratory environment and utilities Serve as a safety point of contact Work with Risk Management for compliance to safety regulators Support annual Risk Management safety inspections and responses to issues Department and University citizenship including Regularly reporting to the department chair Campus Radiation Safety Committee Department Safety Committee Qualifications: It is desirable that candidates be trained in industrial controls, electrical safety standards, fabrication standards, safety standards. This training could be completed after employment. Required: BS degree in physics, astronomy, or electrical engineering plus 5 years of experience in instrumentation design, fabrication, and maintenance experience in analog, RF, digital, microcomputing, and signal processing OR 9+ years of experience Preferred: MS degree in physics, astronomy, or electrical engineering plus 3 years of experience in instrumentation design, fabrication, and maintenance experience in analog, RF, digital, microcomputing, and signal processing Employee Class: Administrative
Work Location: Provo Campus
Environment: Periodic exposure to unfavorable conditions. Need to be in variable temperatures or wet environments, etc.

Physical Exam Details: Physical effort represented by frequent handling of medium weight objects (approx. 20-50 lbs.) and materials, or use of medium weight hand tools. May require climbing and working from ladders or in awkward positions.

Approximate Starting Salary: $62,000 - $81,000 DOQ
