Job Description:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Performs plan of care intervention,
including medication administration , specimen collection, clinical
treatments, as well as other medical care treatment. Documents
patient care given. Monitors, records, and communicates patient
condition as appropriate to care team, physician, patient, and
family. Assists patients with performing activities of daily
living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and
ambulation. Collaborates as needed across disciplines to coordinate
patient care, including patient transfer, discharge, referral and
spiritual/psychosocial support needs. Evaluates learning needs of
patient and/or family and provides patient/family education
appropriate to age, culture, condition , and circumstances . Works
as an advocate for the physical and emotional well-being of the
patient. SURGICAL SERVICES RN REQUIREMENTS Utilizes initiative ;
strives to maintain steady level of productivity; self motivated;
manages activity and time well. Actively participates in
unit/hospital committees. Participates in performance improvement
activities. Makes suggestions, gathers data and assists with
analysis. Considers factors relating to safety , effectiveness, and
cost in planning and delivering care. Effectively communicates and
assists other nursing staff with delivery of nursing care; acts as
a team leader/charge nurse as assigned. Problem solving reflects a
calm demeanor with appropriate professional behavior. Orients new
staff or students as required. Interacts with all levels of staff ,
physicians, patients and families in a respectful , professional
manner. Participates in performance improvement activities . Makes
suggestions , gathers data and assists with analysis. Demonstrates
knowledge of Core Measures and consistently ensures measures are
met and correctly documented for the perioperative patient.
Educates the patient and family regarding pain management. Follows
the five medication rights to reduce the potential for medication
errors. Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain . Utilizes
appropriate pain management techniques. Collaborates with the
patient, significant others, and health care providers in providing
patient care. Demonstrates knowledge of Malignant Hyperthermia
including location of cart and treatment and care of the patient in
crisis. Develops a prioritized holistic plan of care on a
comprehensive assessment, desired outcomes and current knowledge.
Assesses the patient's physical, psychological, social, spiritual,
educational, cultural needs and discharge planning needs to
determine appropriate actions. Assures that medical orders are
entered correctly, communicated appropriately and carried out
accurately and in a timely manner. Delivers nursing care according
to the standards of care defined within the Hospital Policies and
Procedures. Acquires and maintains current knowledge in nursing
practice. Supports and promotes excellence in customer/guest
relations. Supports the philosophy, objectives and goals of the
Department(s) and assesses areas of personal and professional
growth. Able to interpret data about the patient's status in order
to identify each patient's age specific needs and provide care
needed by the patient group. Demonstrates ability to perform timely
and accurate patient assessments on assigned patients within
established time frames. Consults other departments, as needed and
as appropriate, to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the
patient's needs. Evaluates the patient's and family response to
care and teaching and revises the plan of care as needed.
Appropriately responds to the patient in an emergency or physically
distressful situation and communicates with physicians and change
in patient status in a timely manner. Follows hospital policy for
safe medication administration in the operating room. Effectively
communicates and assists other nursing staff with delivery of
nursing care; acts as a team leader/charge nurse as assigned.
Problem solving reflects a calm demeanor with appropriate
professional behavior. RN PACU Performs head-to-toe pre-procedure
assessment on all patients and reassesses intra-procedure and post
procedure as needed. This includes pediatric, geriatric and the
general patient population. Carries out medical and surgical
asepsis during treatments and special procedures. Demonstrates
knowledge of perioperative factors that alter immediate
post-operative phase. Obtains, documents and assesses vital signs
and cardio-respiratory systems every five (5) minutes for changes
and provides appropriate treatment or care. Identifies physical
symptoms and changes and responds appropriately to the patient in
an emergency or physically distressful situation. Communicates with
Physician and/or Anesthesia of any pertinent changes in a timely
manner. Communicates "Hand off" report effectively and thoroughly
on the patient's condition upon transfer from PACU to the receiving
unit Registered Nurse. Maintains moderate sedation competency.
Demonstrates knowledge of sedation medications and ability to
assess cardio-respiratory systems for changes and provides
appropriate treatment. Demonstrates knowledge of airway management
and procedures and the ability to use the equipment. NONESSENTIAL
FUNCTIONS Must have strong interpersonal, oral and written
communication skills. Effective human relations skills are required
for interfacing with team members, all levels of staff, physicians,
patients, families and other contacts. Must possess the ability to
effectively function in a stressful environment. Must possess the
ability to use the following equipment; Telephone/Overhead Paging
System/Fax Machine/Calculator/Computer. As pertinent to the
position, must be able to use computer, telephone, calculator and
adapt to new technology as it becomes available and necessary for
the job. Must have a positive attitude, even temperament in
