Community Rebuilds - Building Apprentice

Job Description:

Community Rebuilds - Building Apprentice

Community Rebuilds was founded in 2007 with the purpose of replacing old, dilapidated trailer homes in Moab, Utah with energy-efficient houses for low income residents. In order to build homes at minimal cost to the homeowner, Community Rebuilds' houses are built "dirt cheap" by using locally sourced sand, clay, and straw. These building materials not only cost less than conventional materials, but are non-toxic and highly insulative, resulting in homes that are healthy for their occupants as well as the environment. Natural building can be expensive due to a lack of natural building expertise in the construction realm and the labor-intensive process of applying multiple layers of plaster. Therefore, Community Rebuilds offers a free Natural Building Internship in which interns are educated by natural building experts in exchange for their labor on the work site. The interns are provided with housing and food stipends for the duration of their internship. Over the last 10 years, Community Rebuilds built 41 houses for low and very-low income residents of Grand, San Juan, and Gunnison counties. Our program also educated and housed over 300 interns, qualifying them for future careers in natural building and conventional construction. Our build sites are open to everyone and hundreds of people come from universities, churches, Bike & Build, and a variety of other organizations to volunteer and learn throughout the year. Community Rebuilds holds a significant role in building climate resilience in the Moab and Bluff communities by improving construction standards, educating people on sustainable lifestyles, and increasing the availability of healthy homes.
